How To Cope With Illness At University

Lately I’ve found myself being stuck in bed due to illness for days, taking what seems like a ridiculous amount of antibiotics rather than actually going to lectures which really sucks. This is also why there has been a lack of posts unfortunately, however regularly posting will resume once I am better! When you fall behind it can make you stress even more, which will make you feel even worse (and so the cycle continues!). You don’t have your parents to tend to your every need any more, so you need to get through this on your own.

However if you do find yourself feeling unwell when you’re on campus, here’s a few tips.

Don’t catch yourself short of pain killers, so make sure you keep some paracetamol/ibuprofen on you at all times. You never know who else might need it too! You may also want to consider keeping a few tissues in your bag – just in case. A little bit of emergency money will come in handy in case you need to take a taxi home, money for antibiotics etc.

When people tell you that rest and water are the best things that can help you, they’re not lying. As well as saving you money, it’s one of the easiest things you can do to help yourself. Missing lectures can cause you to get stressed about missing work, however make sure you email the appropriate lecture/tutor, as then you can figure out a solution to help you catch up when you’re better. This also informs them that you are genuinely ill and not just skiving. If you manage to make it to a lecture, avoid sitting in the middle of a row at the front of the lecture hall. I can imagine it would be really hard to leave the room in an emergency if you don’t want everyone staring at you.

Last of all don’t let your room get a tip while you’re feeling ill, a dirty room isn’t going to make you feel any better any time soon. Even if you can’t manage to make it beyond your bedroom door for a while, take a shower now and then to freshen yourself up. If you do take a turn for the worse, don’t be afraid to make a doctor’s appointment, or head to the walk in centre to be seen on the day.
