For about three years now I’ve had my heart set on skydiving, however money or the wrong time of year has always held me back. Now that I’m in my second year of University, I decided to join my very first society/sport and that happened to be, yup you guessed it, skydiving!
I attended the first social and had such a blast, it just made me want to jump as soon as I could, This weekend saw the first Ground School, and I spent the whole day Saturday learning everything I needed to know, and before I knew it Sunday had arrived – the day of the jump!
I always thought my first jump would be tandem (where you’re essentially strapped to a pro and they do all the work) so it was a bit of a shock and took a while for it to sink in that I would actually be jumping alone. Although I did jump solo, it was a static line jump which means the parachute gets automatically deployed, which did make it a lot less terrifying. As I was sat on the plane waiting for my turn in a very fetching boiler suit/onesie, I did think to myself what on earth was I doing! But once you’re out there casually chilling at 4000ft in the air, it’s just the best feeling ever, and completely worthwhile even if it’s just to tick it off your bucket list.
Skydiving does involve a lot of waiting as I came to realise on the Sunday, as you cannot jump when it’s bad weather which I completely understand. But when everyone is doing the same thing, it means you get to meet new people with the same interests.
Sunday evening I was presented with a certificate from my instructor to say I had successfully completed my basic training and executed my first jump – hooray! I’m really looking forward to going again and improving my jumps each time. If you want to know any more about my skydiving experience, feel free to ask or pop your questions in the comments below!
